Pilgrimage is an integral part of the Christian life; but there are times when we find ourselves unable to make a physical pilgrimage. The journey does not have to stop because of the lack of travel; you can have a spiritual pilgrimage right in your home! Here 6 ways to create a meaningful pilgrimage right where you are:
1. Take a step out of your normal routine
To go on pilgrimage where you are requires you to break from your normal routine. This can be done in several different ways; set some time aside to sit outside (weather permitting) or in a quiet area of your home. Much like when committing to travel on a pilgrimage, leave your normal life behind for a time and make the intentional step to set aside time to be with the Lord.
2. Make the time for pilgrimage
Making time for the pilgrimage is essential for God to work within you. You need to allow space for silence, and slow down from your daily routine. This space will allow time for reflection and make the pilgrimage more meaningful.
3. Journey to a local sacred site
If you are unable to travel very far, you can go to a local sacred site, whether this is a church, an outdoor Stations of the Cross, or just a place where you can sit and be still.
4. Take walks with a purpose
This can be another part of taking a step out of your normal routine. You can walk pretty much anywhere; drive to a local park, walk around the neighborhood, or find somewhere where you can be in nature. Getting outside will help find inspiration for prayer and meditation, and also help your mental health if you have been cooped up in the house for a long time.
5. Take a Virtual tour
There are several pilgrimage sites that you can take a virtual tour of, including The Basilicas and Papal Chapels in Rome, The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Holy Land, The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., and many more. This is a great way to explore sites around the world, all from the comfort of your own home.
6. Trust the process
Much like a physical pilgrimage, an at-home pilgrimage requires the same amount of trust. Trust in God and surrender yourself to him, and he will do the rest!
