In our first episode of season two, we delve into the rich spiritual tradition of the Jubilee year within the Catholic Church. Born from biblical roots, the Jubilee year represents a time for healing, forgiveness, and renewal. In this episode, two of our interns, Josh and Olivia, take over the podcast, turning the table on our host, Joan Watson.
Join us as we examine the origins of the Jubilee, going all the way back to Leviticus 25, where God commanded the Israelites to observe a year of rest every 50 years. This ancient practice speaks to the modern Catholic experience, allowing for reflection on mercy and the need for spiritual rejuvenation.
Listeners learn that the Jubilee represents more than just a break from routine; it’s a profound opportunity to reconnect with God. We’ll look at how Jesus fulfilled the Jubilee of the Old Testament, offering spiritual freedom and grace in his public ministry and ultimately in his death and Resurrection.
The practice of Jubilee encourages Christians to embark on pilgrimages, often to Rome, to seek intercession and mercy from the Lord and pray at the tombs of the Apostles. In addition, we discuss the significance of holy doors, which are only opened during Jubilee years, as a symbol of entering into a year of mercy. However, beyond the physical pilgrimage to Rome, we are all called to engage in the spirit of the Jubilee, regardless of our location. Where can we find unique ways to make pilgrimage meaningful in our lives? How can we heed Pope Francis’s call to see Christ in others and engage in acts of mercy? How can we share 0ur experiences and foster hope within our local communities?
Pilgrimages do not solely bear a geographical focus; rather, they serve to develop one’s relationship with God, instilling the grace to carry this spiritual journey back home. With heartfelt anecdotes and reflections, we encourage you to consider your pilgrimage. How can you be a “pilgrim of hope” in your everyday activities?
