Jubilees are special years called by the pope to be times of grace and reconciliation. During a Jubilee, we seek forgiveness from God and from one another.
Since 1300, Christians have been celebrating Jubilee Years with the Holy Father in Rome. They ordinarily happen every 25 years and are marked with prayer and pilgrimage, particularly to Rome and the tombs of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Jubilee Years also offer the opportunity to gain an indulgence, which the Catechism of the Catholic Church defines as “a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven.” To gain an indulgence, the pilgrim must perform the act that the indulgence is attached to (like walking through the Jubilee Holy Doors), go to the Sacrament of Confession, receive Holy Communion, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father while striving to be detached from sin.

In more recent history, popes often give Jubilee Years a theme. Pope Francis’ theme for the 2025 Jubilee is “Pilgrims of Hope.” Despite wars, pandemics, and poverty, Jesus offers His love and salvation to all. In 2025, we’ll join together to renew our hope in the risen Lord.
Jubilee events will occur throughout the year and will focus on specific groups and themes, including young people, catechists, priests, and families.
